Styling Traditional Rings With Ethnic Wear

Oxidised or kundan, one hand or both — a short guide to wearing traditional rings without overwhelming your outfit.

Rings are the last thing you put on and the first thing people see in close-up photographs. They are also the easiest accessory to overdo.

One statement per hand

Wear one bold ring — index or middle finger — and keep anything else slim. Two heavy rings on the same hand read as clutter rather than as a considered look.

Match the finish, not the colour

Oxidised silver-tone rings belong with mirror work, bandhani and cotton. Antique gold and kundan settings suit zari, brocade and wedding-weight fabric. The metal finish matters more than matching stone colours exactly.

Keep them wearable

Adjustable bands are the practical choice for festive jewellery, especially if hands swell slightly in the heat. Take rings off before applying lotion, and store them dry and separate so oxidised finishes keep their depth.
